When Should You Feed Grasses

Grasses are essential for lush lawns, but when’s the best time to feed your grass? Too early or too late, and you miss out on essential nourishment.

Fertilizer can energize your grass’s growth process to promote beautiful greenery. A good rule of thumb for feeding grass is to apply fertilizer twice a year — once in spring and then again in autumn.

In spring, feed after new growth starts but before it matures. This helps sustain the active growth of blades and roots with nitrogen-based fertilizer while adding phosphorus and potassium levels.

In fall, fertilize late enough that the temperatures remain above freezing but sufficiently early that the root development isn’t compromised by winter’s chill. This helps the grass absorb nutrients during the cooler months so that it’s prepared to green up quickly come springtime.

Be mindful of weather conditions as well; don’t fertilize if heavy rain is forecast within 48 hours, as this runoff may damage beneficial bacteria and microorganisms living in your soil environment.

Beyond regular fertilization, it also pays to aerate your soil periodically. This improves drainage and increases oxygenation, which can revitalize grassroots for healthier maintenance in the future.
