Cacti pups can be an attractive addition to any succulent garden. They offer a wide range of shapes, textures, and colors, making them a great addition to any yard or indoor space. But should you snip off cactus pups?
If your cactus is healthy and thriving, and your desired effect is to keep the original specimen as the focal point of your garden, then it’s probably best not to remove the pups.
Removing them will slow down growth and compromise the health of the main plant. However, if you want more plants from your cactus, or have too many pups crowding around, then it’s perfectly acceptable to clip some off – with care!
Using sharp shears or pruners, cut close to the parent plant without damaging its outer edges. Place cuttings in a separate pot on their own, so they can continue growing. Make sure they get adequate sunlight and water while they develop their root systems. Regularly check their roots and give them extra care if needed.
When transplanting the pup into a new soil mix, choose something that dries quickly, like cactus mix or succulent potting soil, in order to reduce rot danger due to too much moisture surrounding its delicate young roots. Follow these steps and enjoy watching your little sapling take root!
