Sunflower seeds are easy to grow but require dedication and care for best results. Here’s how to get started:
Start by selecting a sunny spot with plenty of room for the tall sunflowers to stretch their stalks. Prepare the soil by removing weeds, adding organic matter, and tilling the earth. Plant the seeds 1-2 inches deep in rows 6-8 inches apart and water deeply each day until germination occurs. Keep soil evenly moist during the spring season, as dry weather can be detrimental.
As sunflowers grow taller and stronger, they will need support from stakes or cages so they don’t topple over in strong winds and storms. Feed plants every two weeks with a liquid fertilizer, especially Potassium Nitrate, to promote large blooms, vivid color, and plentiful petals.
Deadhead spent blooms regularly, and remove unhealthy seed heads are yearly once all flowers have died off completely. Finally, clean up debris as soon as possible when winter approaches to avoid fungus spores from winter’s previous years growing over your flowerbeds again. With proper love and care, you’ll have bountiful summer blooms all summer long!
