How Cold Is Too Cold For Bonsai

Cold is crucial for a wide variety of bonsai. But how cold is too cold?

It depends on the species of bonsai, climate, and winter preparation. Temperate trees can survive temperatures as low as -20°C, while subtropical trees generally do well in temperatures as low as -3°C.

In colder climates, it’s important to prepare your bonsai for winter. Protect them from frost and extreme cold by covering them with fleece or placing them indoors in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Reduce watering frequency but ensure that soil remains slightly damp.

If you experience especially cold weather, you may want to bring your plants into your home or greenhouse before nighttime temperatures drop too low.

Remember: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
